I know this has been a topic thats been discussed over and over, as I did do a search and read many, many pages. And I know how some folks feel about adding ps to these trucks, and if I piss anyone off asking this, I apologize ahead of time. But I want to know my options on this. I see the 65's and 66's and twin I beams have simpler solutions, but I really didnt see (or missed seeing) solutions for adding power steering to straight axles.
Is there a good parts list for adding power steering to a 62 straight? Anyone have a parts list for this or good donor models/years for parts? Mine is a 62 Y block 292 with headers.
62 Straight Axle Power Steering?

No Limit Engineering has a Rack & Pinion power steering setup for the straight axle (61-64) Ford trucks. $679.
http://nolimit.net/prodinfo.asp?number=PS-SA- (note: use the drop down to find the year/model application).
Think this is the one Max has. Pretty simple as it bolts to the straight axle. You will need to replace the steering column with an aftermarket (or cut the stock column) in order to attach the column to the R&P and you'll need a PS pump. A very slick setup.
There's a link on the site for installation instructions but doesn't seem to be working now (at least for me).

One of your biggest issues is going to be finding a double crank pulley for the Y, the Pump bracket, and then a pump that will fit it.
Those are some pretty uncommon Y parts and can be pretty spendy.
I don't have anything against PS on a straight axle - just if everything is in good shape I don't see a need to add more parts to replace. I have bad shoulders - really bad shoulders! Doctors told me I shouldn't even own anything that doesn't have an auto tranny and power steering. I have no trouble driving my straight axle trucks even with the wider tires on the front.

I haven't found them that hard to find or very expensive, but I've been looking for a while and grab them when I find them. John Mummert has all you need to install a power steering pump on a Y. Again not cheap, but if you're going with power steering on a Y, then you do what you have to do. Y-Blocks Forever is also a good source.Greg D wrote:One of your biggest issues is going to be finding a double crank pulley for the Y, the Pump bracket, and then a pump that will fit it.
