Now that she is running, wish list: need some help

Post by Southern64 »

Ok I am on the road after 5 long years. Couple things that would be nice, let me know if they are all possible. I have a 64 with a 302 and C4 auto.

1. Can I get the stock speedo to work with my C4?
2. I have a lokar shifter, can I get the Nuetral Safety switch to work with the C4?
3. I am just running a Summit Fuel cell, can I get a sending unit for it? Already ran out of gas the 1st day driving it.
4. Can I Please get over 6mpg????? 30miles tapped the 5 gallons I had in the cell.

Yes on everything except the gas milage.
Everything is available thru Lokar and people like Jeg's and Summit.
There's something wrong there.
You'll have to noodle that one out by yourself.

Thanks . I did convert the front to disc. The booster is a universal 7" from eBay. The plug wires are Ford racing .

What rearend ratio are you running? When you changed the engine tranny, di you change gear ratio to match? These trucks were geared rather low for work purposes, especially pre 65.

I did not change the gears. It had the straight 6 stock, were there multiple gear options? 3.55 maybe?

Southern- Man, your truck is looking great. As for the ratio, with 30" tall rear tires and a 3:89 my effective ratio is 3:50. Still too low without overdrive. I am getting ready for a T-5 swap and may still need to go with a taller gear. My opinion with the C4 is to go taller for good fuel mileage. They run something like 3:08's in Mustangs with 5 speed. If you have a 9" there are plenty of options and ring and pinion sets are readily available. Remember, you will lose some of your hole-shot with taller gears.

Good luck.

That's 6mpg city, right?
You can't compare Mustang gear ratios with our trucks because of tire size, weight, and aerodynamic differences. A mustang with a 3.08 will behave differently than our trucks with a 3.08. I think you should be able to get it around 9 mpg city and 13 highway using the stock rear gearing, certainly more than 6mpg. If you just got it on the road, you don't have much time getting the engine dialed in. That will help.
My ruck was originally a 223 and it came with a 3.70.

6 mpg is a problem. If it's stock or mild you should be getting WELL into the double digits.

I have a hotrod with a solid-cammed high compression 401 with a 950 HP carb, 3200 stall. 3.73 gears and get 6 mpg. My 7000+ lb F250 Super Duty Crew Cab gets 11.

I used to mess with BB Oldsmobiles and could get 15 mpg out of a 455 with a T400 and 3.00+/- gears in a 5000 lb land yacht.

All this is to say that you need tuning. Check your advance in the distrubutor, carb needs tuning, probably pretty rich. Gears are a little low. 2.75 pumpkins can be found in junkyards everywhere. An AOD tranny will boost your gas mileage by a bunch with both lockup and OD.

I know I'm new here and new to slicks, but I have been building cars of numerous makes (including Ford) for about 29 years and a LOT of stuff is universal. For me to settle for 6 mpg, I would expect to run solid <12.00 ET in the quarter mile or be able to pull a 72' mobile home down the highway. Just sayin' . . .

I'm with Sully (and the others). You need to check your tune.. . or something

I am running an AOD (with no OD, long story) which is 1:1 in 3rd through a 3.7 rear end ("stock" gearing for a 65 6cyl) and i get 15-18 mpg (more on the highway if i keep my foot out of it.

Oh, my engine is a 302 EFI Rollercam built to 1992 mustang specs save the camshaft and a couple of other things.

The speedo can be made to work with litle effort. What exactly is your issue? You will likely need to do some "figuring" on which gear to use. Just buy a handful and go from there.
