No, the Detroit or GMC diesels as they were commonly called at the time didn't use turbos. They used a roots blower.

Figure out his address & send him a letter. A stamp is cheaper than suffering a dog bite!

Is that the original application for the blowers used on racers in the early years?

Paul, its the same source, GM made the engines in several different sizes. 453, 653, 653, 671, 6V71, 8V71, 12V71 to mention a few. The first number is the number of cylinders 4,6,8,12. The second number is the cubic inches of each cylinder. Example a 6-71 would 6 cylinders X 71 cubes per cylinder= 426 cubes. The blowers varied in size depending on the engine. Many of these blowers ended up on drag race cars of the fifties and sixties and even later years.

'63 was the first year for diesels in the F 950 series, however the RPO diesel was a Cummins V6 4 cyle which used both scoops. If the truck in the photo has a GM V6 diesel, it was a DSO at that time. Image

I did a little research from some material I have and I stand corrected, you are totally correct that only the Cummins was available for 63. The reason I was so sure of myself was because the guy that gave me the picture said the truck had belonged to his dad and that his dad bought it new. The guy that gave me the picture was only kid at the time and probably does not remember correctly as I do not think he would deliberately lie about it. Another reason I did not question it was because I had seen a 68 F series with a 6V Detroit in it that was factory and just assumed that it was available as early as 63. Also the black 65 Mercury that I posted has a 6V71, another reason to believe that it was a possibility, but looking close at the Mercury I see it was originally a Super Duty meaning that someone changed out the gas burner that was in it for the Detroit. We learn something new every day here. Thanks for the clarification.

The truck is still around, the picture was taken a couple of years ago at a truck. It is still alive and well and looks just as good as it ever did.

Chris...I can tell you the 453 detroit was available as the base supercharged version or the optional 453T which had both the supercharger and a turbo.

I am really going to like the look of this once I decide the color to paint it and the spot to locate it.

[albumimg]8759[/albumimg]

Definitely sits right over washer nozzle hole location.

[albumimg]8760[/albumimg]

Sits nicely on driver's side..... might be a huge undertaking to try to center it on hood nicely.

[albumimg]8761[/albumimg]

The grille was the nicest thing about this purchase.

We're these scoops only for cooler air or do they actually provide a ram effect?

I know you like the grill in the scoop and so do I BTW but;
mounted on the drivers side it would be a cool place to mount some gauges and/or a tach.

The Chevy guys like to brag about the cowl induction hoods on the Chevelle's. Ford was way ahead of them by using it on the Ford trucks as early as 58. One of the reasons it was turned backwards. The other reason was to keep ice from forming in bad weather and cutting the air flow off to the engine.

Cam
this was Cams last post.....

just a short story on what type of guy he was...
a couple of months back i was having some trouble with back problems
lotsa pain , and fall harvesting & wheat planting were coming up
laying on my back all day not being able to stand
several members from Slick 60s contacted me wanting to know if they could come and help me out.
VERY hard to describe what kind of feeling that gives a person.
Cam , was one of those guys.....
he said he would take off work & come help do some farming
that about sums it up .....

heres the message Cam sent me....
''Hey Pat, I'm stuck in Laredo right now but could be home in a few days.
Pm me your number(573 587 9639) and I'll come see what I can help you get done.
I can drive a grain truck or run a combine, tractor and disk/drill...whatever.
More than glad to help out a friend.''

i dont think i saw Cam drink a beer at SlickStock...
so i guess i will have to go buy a little Swisher Sweet and have a smoke.

that is because he only drank 1- on the last night about 3 am.
Cam said he got the giggles real bad if he drank anymore beer than that.
it was hilariously funny at the time, one of those things you just had to be there to understand.

I got him to repeat the story about the time the FBI came knocking!, to Lyn and Michelle, just before he left Altoona for home!. He fired up telling the story!, but explained he wasn`t angry with us!, just the authorities!. I miss you mate!.

vent to washer nozzle location

Post by F7BIGJOB »

This is on the '64 F 750 fire truck on ebay, without measuring nozzle location on my 250, I would think the nozzle is in the factory place and placed vent forward of it.
