Friday was a Sad day for my Truck

Post by PFM-64f100 »

I had a cubscout campout this weekend on lake texoma. With most of these pack campouts I seem to haul some/most of the Pack's camping gear. That is the fun part and my truck likes doing the work. Well this friday was the last trip for a while (possible long while).

Started out Friday (about 2pm) got about 1 hour into the trip and all of a sudden smoke started pouring out the back of the truck. Crap I'm in the fast lane and person next to me got scared and started slowing down also. Finally they got out of my way and I pulled off the free way. Craweld under the truck to find something leaking. At first I tought tranny lines but due to the spot I couldn't get under the truck all the way. I pulled up about 800 feet to a good spot but noticed a very big drop in power. GRRRRR

When I was able to get under the truck I found that oil was coming out the rear of the pan. Plus the rubber plug in the pan was leaking.
Needless to say I still had oil in the engine but not for long. Crap I can't fix this on the side of the road just no way.

Called a tow truck about 1 1/2hr later they came and got me. I still have most of the camping gear in my truck. Long story short we got the camping gear to the campout and I got my truck home last night.

It's gonna be fun figuring out what went wrong but I will get the Crew Cab up and runing first. Then tear into the 64. Fiugred I would share this with all, but I do have a 63 sitting behind my shop that I could drive if I needed to. :) (until dave comes and gets it. :))

What engine is in the truck? If, it is a yblock 292 then you have an exterior oil pump. My gues would be the seal blew on the plate at the bottom of the pump. This is a rubber o-ring with a plate and four bolts (7/16 head). Could also be the seal at the block gaket. Not to bad to fix, jus twatch out for the gears when you take the plate off, so these don't fallout. If you leave the plate off while trying to find the rubber o-ring, most likely the gears will come out . ther are other seals on that oil pump and tube. If you take the oil pump off, be sure to replace the tube to oil pump seal with a new correct on, ifyours has gotten hard. I can't stress this enough the seal for the tube is 9$ plus shipping from Carpenters.

Ice is right it is Texas. Low was 38.. high was 70 ish so all was great... :) besides that with the boy scouts we camp in winter also. Last year when we got to the site it was 24 degree's outside and dropping. Just means you pack more gear. :)

Rich the engine is a 1970 - 460 with a C6. I fully rebuilt it 15 years ago. I really hope it is just the pan gasket but with a loss of power at the same time I think it has more problems.

Max yes it did make it to SS4 and back. I am very thank full for that and come to think about it she was using a little bit more oil than was normal. Hummm..

Thanks all I will keep everyone updated when I start tearing into the truck. I think I will have to start a build thread when I do start on the 64. :)

YES time for the EFI and Hydro booster swap. Plus I might just work on the outside color of the truck... I just wish it waited until after the crew cab was done but then again she might just be pissed at me because of the crew cab.

Yes grits that is one big oil slick good thing I wasn't near the gulf coast... Bad chris Bad...

If you pull the engine out it would be a good time to detail the engine bay. And while you have the stuff out to paint you could do a little body work and paint too.
