My slick needs help
My slick needs help
Took my slick out today. While shifting from 2nd to third, my shifter poped out. I managed to get the transmission in third and drove it home. Is this something a novice can fix or do i need to bring it to a shop. I have a 66 f 250, 2wd, 352, 4 speed. Any input would be helpful thanks

I am no mechanic by no means but I have had a problem similar to this. One was when my supports as bad and the cab dropped down. That caused shifting issues. The second issue is easy to find out. I not sure what its called but I can describe it. There is a adjustment rod that goes between the throwout bearing fork and the clutch pedal . Mine fell out one a couple of times. The first time I was lucky to find it in a mud puddle. next time it came out and landed in the frame lodged. What it did was to get stuck in whatever gear it winded up in and you couldn't shift. Another thing it could be is the steering tube. It is in the steering column. The worst one to do is the cab maounts. the other can be done by a novice I would think.
Being a '66 F250, I'm going to assume you have a four speed floor shift tranny. Judging from your description, I'm also going to assume that the retaining ring/nut has it's locking ears worn off...mine were worn pretty badly once & it was only hanging on my one ear.
This shifter is from a '76, but the locking ring should be identical to one found on a slick.
(sorry for the out of focus pic
)

The problem is that the "C" shaped ear wears off & allows the collar to slip off the two pins in the transmission neck, allowing the shifter to spring free.
Installed correctly, the collar pushes against a spring, that in turn puts constant pressure on the shifter base to hold it in the transmission neck.
To install/undo the collar, you simply press down hard & twist.

You will need to remove your shifter boot to inspect this ring. Beware, everything in there is & should be nice & greasy...so get a rag.
