question about swapping in a auto trans

Post by unclejtl »

hi, I have searched and not found the exact answer I need.
I have a f250 with a 352 4bbl and a four speed with the granny gear. it's a new process (forget the #) trans. I also have a dana60 w/4:10 gears and 31" tires.
The clutch needs replaced. I've been wanting a auto trans as I pull a 18' 1964 traveleze trailer and it would be easier for my wife to drive it.
I have found a c6 out of a 88 f350. will it fit to the motor and will I need a different crossmember? driveshaft? I know I will need a cooler and shifter. when looking at a auto trans, how do I know it will fit my setup?

thanks for your input.

The C-6 transmission had an integral bellhousing, specific to the engine family, like small block (289, 302, 351W, 351C), FE (352, ,360, 390, etc) and the 429, 460 as well as the 351M and 400.
There are also different tailhousing lengths and driveshaft connections.
Tha C-6 was introduced in 1966 and used in FE powered trucks through 1976 (I believe).
You would be best served by finding a donor truck and getting the complete conversion.

If you do find a FE C6 or any other FE automatic you will have to change the radiator that is in your truck to one that has the transmission cooling tank in the bottom of the radiator. There are two cooling lines that attach to the bottom of the radiator, you will also have to change the fly wheel to one for an automatic, I am almost sure you will have to change the location of the rear mount. You will also have to modify your drive shaft to accept the C6 yoke and will probably have to end up shortning the driveshaft. To make it look correct you will need find a steering column from a truck with an automatic transmission.

roger, thanks for that. I thought the 460 was an FE, well I thought all big blocks were FE's. i will look for an earlier one.

michelle, thanks for all that. I figured the drive shaft would be altered and a trans cooler added, it was the mount I was unsure of. as far as looking correct, well... I have a bit of the rebel in me :D

thanks again for all the input

Too bad you live so far south of me. I know where there is every thing you need for the conversion near me for pretty good prices. Shipping would make it pretty expensive. The best thing you can do is find a complete truck configured the way you want and then just transfer the parts then sell what is left and make some of your money back.

mike, yep, i'll keep scanning craigs list for a late 60's early 70's truck with an auto then sell the rest. that seems the best way to go about it.

thanks

another question... is there a difference between a f100 c6 trans and a f250 c6 trans? given they both had 360 in front of them and were of, let's say, 1972 vintage.

No difference in any of the C-6's with the possibility of the shift linkage placement. If you're planning on using something like a Lokar after market shifter, it will adapt to any of the lever placements.
