clean, sand blast and repairs.
the firewall and cab mounts are in great shape.
some small holes in the cab floor.
rust with pinholes below the back window and a big hole to fix in the bed floor.
working out in the sun.

did the cut into the bed today
50 year old bolts

50 year old rusted metal

going to have to fix that piece too

the red paint is where i scribed the line to cut. i made a start of 3" on either side and along the ends with the air cutoff tool then sawzalled the rest.amazingly i stayed on the good side of the line while sawing.

found a piece for the bed wall bottom too. its a bit thicker but thats fine.

this is taking time. told my wife i did not care i would rather be slow and happier in the end than rushing through to beat the clock.
now i am at the point where theres only a few bolts holding the uni to the frame. and i can pretty much guarantee if i separate them it wont get back together for driving this summer.
much as i would like to i cant spend 100% of every day on it.worked on the barn for almost a week, need to get back at that again too.

i got the last rusty piece cut off today as well as made the replacement and cleaned up both sides of the floor pieces so there is minimal gap between the 2.
now i need to sandblast the area real good so i can weld that stuff in.
temp was above 70 today, a bit uncomfortable out in the sun so i had more than the usual amount of breaks.

finally got to attack the bed repair
had to make a new piece for under and an angle iron at the front.
the angle iron is not factory but its not going to rust. will be a bit noticeable after its all done. only thing i had to use there so thats what i ended up with.

now i am sandblasting the bed
if i had a bbw this would get cut out
i dont so filler is necessary.

i have most of the bed floor sandblasted but yesterday a thunderstorm came up fast while i was in eating dinner and made mud of the sand on the floor of my bed.
i swept it out and covered up the truck with visqueen and a tarp.it rained all night after and most of today.
i got 2 fresh bags of sand today so next sunny day i will finish it up.

thanks Greg
welding up and down the ribs was fun.
lining them up was too. they are very close but even though both bed floor and repair piece came from the same year truck the stampings are not a 100% perfect match. not easy to see after the welding/blasting then painting but slightly aggravating for the lineup.

You are great at the bed repair, you won't be able to tell it is not original once it is painted.

thanks to the 30 days in a row of rain, progress has been extermely slow.
i got my front springs cleaned up, painted and new eye bushings pressed in.
the frame horns are badly distorted from an accident sometime in the trucks life.
although the truck steered perfectly straight down the road, the bumper did not line up correctly and the springs were not straight in line which make the bushings wear quickly so i have come up with a repair plan

i have carefully cut them off another frame and once i cut the bad ones off will weld the repair pieces back in place. if and when the rain stops.

hello Iceman, first time I have checked out your build. Looks great, your metal workmanship shows you have talent and patience. Even though your uni requires alot of work, it really was in good shape to start with. My truck required a donor floor and a complete torque box rebuild from below. Your floor, torque box look sound, tailgate too, I do not want to admit how much work I have in my tailgate. Unibodies are so cool. Keep up the good work, I'll be sure to keep an eye on your project...Dave
