Door Tag decoding

Post by ripsnorter »

Ok I'm starting to get annoyed here.

I know back when i first joined someone posted a link for me to a site that had all the door tag decoding info. I've been running searches, looked through all my old posts, (ok not all )but still can't find it. I've been googling, but most of the links are to FTE's silly "we give you part of the info, then you need to register to get the rest" crap.

I need to decode 5 different trucks.

Trans Axle

1962 4 12

1963 F 24

1963 F 12

1980 C C5

1991 K C72

I'd really like to find a site that I can just bookmark so i have it so i dont have to ask again, but I posted the doortag codes anyway.

Now onto a few other questions

Is limited slip really a big deal? I believe the 91 has it (4x4 as well) which is my donor truck, and I'm just wondering at the real advantages of it.

Whats the big deal on the Danas? I've been reading a bit about them here and there and it seems like everyone and their dog wants them.

Last question:
I was driving down into town tonight and for amusement was trying to figure out the RPMs a certain configuration would run at 60MPH. I checked it against http://www.ring-pinion.com/Calc_RPM.aspx when I got home, and was surprised at how far off I was. after redoing my calculations, I'm STILL all screwed up and can't figure out why. SO.... heres my formula:

Tire Diameter (lets use 26" for arguments sake) 26" x pi= 3.14159 = 81.68 inches in circumference. 81.68 divided by 12" = 6.80 feet.

60MPH = 1mile per minute. (think I just figured out where I screwed up)

1 mile=5280 feet divided by 6.80 feet = 776.47 RPM at the wheel.

776.47 x whatever rearend ratio is, say 3.70 for sake of argument.

776.47 x 3.70 = 2872.9 RPM at the engine.

Well, having actually written it out I think I came up with the right answer, or a heck of a lot closer than before. However this was simply the way I did it in my head driving down the road, so does that look like the proper way to do it to you folks?

I'd also like to say, after that big long cobbled together post, that since I've come here I've learned a lot from you folks. I came here not knowing much of anything about these old trucks, or much at all about trucks etc to be honest  I still dont :D but I've learned a lot, and really appreciate everyones patience and helping me out.

Thanks all you Slickers ;)

I had a 280Z at on time that the speedometer didn't work, but the tach did. That's how I figured my speed, but kinda bacwards. Did figure out that without spoilers, it would start floating at 130 MPH.

I can help here.

For the '80, C5 is the 4.56 limited slip, but I didn't know trans code C was used until '88 with the ZF. Is it a four speed manual? What model truck, and what motor? I'd like to know for my tranny info page.

http://www.f150online.com/forums/showth ... p?t=211867

For the '91, K is the C6 auto, and 72 is an open 4.63. Not sure about the C in front. The C6 was mostly replaced in '89 though by the E4OD, except for heavy service trucks. Again, what model and motor truck?

Dana 60 front axles are highly prized for their beefyness and swappin' into half tons to mount big tires.

Limited slip is handy to get both wheels pullin' without the hindrance durin' daily drivin' a locker can have.

Thanks a lot adrian, youre my new hero :)

I was wondering about the C in front as well, as it didnt seem to coincide with a lot of the tag decoders I had found. Granted none of them were actually for my trucks, but it still seemed odd. I'll have to go back out and double check to make sure I wrote that down right.

The 80 is an F250 extended cab with an automatic. I assume its a C6 transmission, but then you know what they say about assumptions. I believe it also has a 460 in it. I bought it years ago with the passengers side bashed in and the intention of rebuilding it for a driver. however I never had the time or space to do it, and now the mold has gotten into it and the headliners falling down. I might just make it a parts truck, or try and sell it.

The 91 is an F250 as well, but it has a 5 speed manual in it supposedly. It was also an ex-diesal truck, but that has been pulled out of it. However this isnt to say that the tranny or even rearends couldnt have been swapped out at some point.

I'll go back at later today if I can and get the codes off them again. I think I may try and get the numbers off the 5speed as well, and possibly try and get the numbers off the rearends. Where would the numbers be at on the 5 speed?

'80 would be a C6 if'n an automatic. Never saw C as it's code though. Course I can't say I saw an '80's code specifically. 17 bolt pan?

Rear axle should be a Dana 60.

For the '91, if it was a diesel, it would be the ZF5-S42 for sure. Diagonal ribbing on it's aluminum case is the spotting clue. Great tough tranny, but can only bolt up to another IDI diesel as the bellhousing is not removable.

Front axle would be a Dana 50 TTB, not worth a whole lot, but the rear is the desirable Sterling 10.25, and if a full floating version, a very nice find. Prolly not the less desirable semi float with that deep of gears though.

Figuring a picture is worth a thousand words, I figured I'd post 6 of em. :) that should put me ahead a bit on the word count here.

Image

not sure if you can see the ribs on the tranny, but it looks diagonal to me. is there no way to get an adaptor to mate up that tranny to a 460? if there isnt theres not much reason for me to buy the truck.

Image

Image

I posted two pics of the rear axle and pumpkin from the 91. It doesnt look free floating to me, but I'm by no means an expert. Sadly someone for some reason took the tag off the rearend and I couldnt find any other numbers on it except "1204" on the passenger side rear of the pumpkin.

We also have an old early 80s ranger sitting around here, unfortunately that thing went through at least one flood that went up above the rear end, so it would probably need rebuilding if i were to use it. It however also doesnt have a tag, and the tag on the cab has been wiped out by the flood. I posted a pic of it as well though since it seemed different than my other pumpkins and I was hoping someone could recognize it by sight, or at least a general idea of it. I'm not hoping for a ratio, but an idea of what it is would be nice.

Image

Pics of both tags as well, hopefully they'll help with your info page. (looks good by the way) You can see both C's in the axle field.

If that tranny wont work I guess I'm gonna have to keep a lookout for a decent 5 speed. I'd go Tremec but thats a little spendy :(

That bottom one from the 80's truck looks like a Dana 60 to me. The '91 looks like the 10.25" corporate(?) rear end that all the newer F250 &350's are using these days.

I looks like the Dana 60's breather hose is still attached, so it may not have filled with water when it was submerged. That only leaves the brakes to be a rusted lump. :)

Sorry for not gettin' back to ya!

Ummm, ya mixed up the info in your first post.

C is the tranny code for ZF-5 tranny in the '91.

Also, C5 would be the limited slip 4.10 for the '91.

Axle is a Sterling (corporate is chebby) 10.25. The 8.8 is much smaller and can be seen here...

Image

Check the axle ends to find out if full or semi floating. A full floating hub looks like this.

For the '80, K is the C6 tranny, and while I'm still lookin' up that ratio for ya, it most def is a Dana 60.

heh thanks a lot for posting that on another board, I was at a loss.

I may have to register over there now just so I can post in that thread.

It's not technically my tranny yet, but if the guy wants a swap I'll buy the truck and swap it with him. I would think shipping would kill us though.

The other guy with the tools is in oregon, trying to remember where newberg is, but at least its not on the east coast. probably wouldnt be too spendy to just mail the tools he made.

Thanks Adrian. I'll go out and check out the hubs on the 91 later today too, gotta go to work now.

in looking at the 2 ford door tags the tire pressure is 40/70 and 51/80. 30psi seems to be a lot of difference between front and rear. all my "old" trucks have the same in all 4 tires.not sure why they have such a big difference in the newer ones?

Today's radials versus old bias plies? That's the only thing I can figure. :hm:

That would be a pressure used for the MAX gvwr.

In my '02, I just keep 'em all at 50 for normal drivin, but pump up the rears to 80+ when loaded down.

Feel free, it's just as friendly as here, and you already got some offers to trade a IDI bell for a 460. Not sure on shippin' feasibility though.

No, thats the giant full floating hub. Just happens thats the sterling version and not exactly the same as the dana i pictured.

A semi float axle looks like this outside.
