300 6 cyl.
just talked to my dad. he thinks i should put a 300 6 cyl. in my truck instead of the 351 windsor, and of course he knows a guy that has one. he just doesnt like the guy who is selling me the 351. he says the 300 6 cyl. is a tougher motor. he never likes my ideas. its my truck, and i want the 351. he's 85 and thinks 500 dollers is a good price to pay for a motor. i told him i was buying a steering gear box for it for 300, he thinks i'm crazy. enough said, had to get it off my chest.

Dude.
If you can find an early 1990's 300 with the EFI and the 5-speed overdrive it would be a killer combination... and look bitchin' in the engine compartment too.
I mean, how many of those will you ever see at a car show?
I had a '94 that I put over 217,000 miles on and it never faltered.
Go for it and stretch the envelope.

i dont argue with my dad, i just listen to what he has to say and go on, but now you guys have got me thinkin about goin for the 300 6cyl. i'm not sure what year it is, my dads gonna check on it tomorrow and let me know what year and how much. i do love the way they look under the hood, and i'm not trying to build a show truck or a hotrod, i just want a decent lookin , dependable, daily driver . my dad has a 1980 ford truck with a 300 6 cyl. in it . it has a carberator. and it does run good . now i'm confused again, i shouldnt have told him about my plans for my slick . i think he is talkin about the straight 6 cyl. thats what he has in his 1980 ford truck.
let dad win this one....
farmed side by side with mine for 40+ years.....
and i'm not even 50 yet.
lost him a couple years ago...
sure would like to hear him tell me what to do.... and how to do it.
besides.. a 300 is one of the best motors around...

Banjo!! Say it ain't so , son.banjopicker66 wrote:Sixes are good for trucks, they pull and torque well, whether as a work hauler or a play toy.
I would vote 460 (since I can't make the 445 diesel work) because there is no replacement for displacement - but you'll look just as cool and pass a lot more gas stations with an EFI overdrive 6.
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

well not that my opinion matter much in this debate, but i have a 240 in mine (same 300 block) and its pretty smooth and simple to work on. My dad had a 65 with a 300 in it on the farm 50 years ago and it would pull and stop wagons full of crops across the field all day long. inline with drums worked for him using a truck as a truck, im sure it will be fine for me tooling around getting ice cream and junk from home depot.
6=8 as they say...and someday I'll have this from Clifford

ok. i'm gonna wait and see what year the 300 is and how much he wants for it , i was gonna give 1200 for the rebuilt 1969 351 windsor. but i really do like the way the 300 straight 6 looks, to me the straight 6 has that old days look that i like so much now that i'm gettin older. i'm older then my truck and its a 1966. yearning for the old days when life seemed so much simpler. even if the good old days were'nt so good. if i end up with the 300, and its older and has a carb. will i have to get a different transmission or just a different bell housing ?

I will quote you:
And yes, you are correct. 351M, 400, 429 and 460 share the same block patterns.
...because you left out the 302.slickmainer wrote:dont quote me but for some reason I thought I heard that as long as it wasn't a 351 Modified, the 351C, 351W, and 300 all had the same small block pattern.

thanx slickmainer , i hope you're right. / anthony that is a work or art . i love the way your motor looks, i would be happy to have a 300 straight 6 in my truck, i guess my dad was right. like i said he's 85 years old and he's ready to pull the 302 out tonite. i wont be surprised if he's here everyday to help me. or at least to tell me what to do. thats cool , lookin forward to workin with him . i think.
I bought a truck with a 240 same as the 300 but with less strokena couple weeks ago.. It had two busted compression rings... number 6 exhaust lobe was in the oil pan... it did 65 on a 50 mile trip back home.. never hesitated.. even went to work and pulled my box out of the shop in traffic no problem... with it hitting on 2 and a half cylinders... lifters were seized in block... it's amazing how dependable these things are.. i've got a set of 429 thunderjet heads, a 460 block, a 351 windsor block from 71, a set of cleveland heads, a 302 out of a 85 mustang, a c4 and two c6's.. and so far out of all of them this is my favorite motor... it's rock solid... i'm building it this week i'll snap some pics. I'll definately take a 240 / 300 from now on if at all possible.. Don't get me wrong though.. I love my bigblocks.

Here is my step-by-step of what I did.

I thought it was easy, but I think everything is easy when I am done.
It was not that bad. I could do it over the weekend if I had to do it in another truck.
