Factory Cast iron Galaxie Headers

Post by jakdad »

I looked at a set of these. Doesnt look like they will work on a 65/66 twin I beam truck. Anybody tried it?

Jim.
Are you talking about the "shorties" or the long tube headers?
My truck isn't a twin I-beam, but I do have the shorties on it and they fit well. They are a little bit closer to the steering box than I'd like but I haven't had any problems to date.
And they do look cool.
I do think you would have aproblem with the long ones though.
I would think that if they'd fit in the engine compartment of a car that you'd have lots of room in a truck.
If you want some measurements for the headers to the block, I'd be glad to take some pictures and measurements for you.
Or, if you'll cook some ribs, I'll drive Nadine to Katy and you can take a look at the real deal
The only real option other than these is a good set of Sanderson's. BroncoTom has them and they're worth every penny.

Thanks skip,
The long tubes are what I looked at. I like the shorties also. Don't remember what they came on.
What did you think about the installation pics of the traction bars. Looks like they would work on our trucks. I may call Duff next week and tell'em what we're up to.
No need to bother with pics now, just speculatin'..........................

Even if the long tube units fit, which I doubt because of the limited space for the clutch linkage and other stuff, they hang down to far and are prone to cracking when water splashes up on them after they've heated up...... and I guarantee you, regardless of the weather, if you drive in Houston you're going to run thru some water on the street.
I looked at the traction bars and I think they'd work as is. But it seems like we could make some on that pattern with some mounting tabs, the sway bar links off a big Bronco, a 1-1/2" piece of chrome molly tubing and a long 5/8" grade 8 bolt.
What do you think about that idea?
I'm off to do some measuring :D .

Sounds good. My only problem with building my own is figuring out the bushings for mounting. I dont want anything metal to metal. I have some front suspension bushings that I'm looking at now. May be some possibilities there. Then I think, for a hunnerd bucks, ready made is hard to beat even if you modify them a little.
Skip, if you are talking about the threaded end of the rod being 5/8", I would look at least 3/4" or maybe 1". I think theirs is 3/4" (not sure) and I'm not sure that is enough. If I buy theirs and have a failure on the threaded end, I could go from there for an upgrade.

I'm talking about the bushings that would be hard mounted and swivel like the ones mounted on the spring perch in the pictures [these are the same as the sway bar link ends].
For the threaded adjustable end, I'd use a urethane shock tower bushing like the picture shows. I got all kinds of ideas and I think the larger 3/4" diameter bolt would be better too.
1" seems like overkill to me.
The right angle brackets will be the more difficult part, but the rear top sway bar brackets from a late model Camero would work for the adjustable end. Just have to fabricate the bracket for the spring perch.
I'll let you know what I do.
$100 isn't the problem, I just like to make s#!^ (like front sway bars for straight axle trucks) .
