351 C trans question

Post by STOFFER »

i just read on a few posts that the 351 Cleveland uses the same bell housing as the small block fords 289-351W.

if this is correct then I should be able to get a 5 speed truck tranny from an early 90's truck and snag the tranny for my '65 F-250.

anybody have any opinions on this swap? is it possible? I am currently running the C-6 trans but I prefer to have a manual transmssion and one with overdrive would help.

I have a 351C in my 56 panel. Since being in my panel, it has been hooked to 2 FMX, a C6, and now an AOD. My panel gets about 18mpg and runs 2200 rpms at 70mph. I love that engine/trans combination and it makes me wish I had that in my Slick.
You are correct that the transmissions from a small block(289/302/351W) or 6 cylinder (240/300) will bolt to a 351 Cleveland. Transmission selection can be tricky on a 351C depending on the cylinder heads used. The 4-V heads are so large that the engine does not come alive until 2500 rpms. An overdrive would be pointless if the rpms drop too low.

stoffer I read in a Mustang magazine that this is a common swap among classic Mustang enthusiasts. They of course, came with 351C's in the late 60's early 70s, and there are kits to swap them out to T5's, and T6's even.

Best to check in with the mustangs boys on one of their sites I would think.
Be a dang nice combo, I would like to have that one myself, however a bit strange to have in your 3/4 ton.

Be sure you have a C and not an M befor you buy a trans.

Lonnnie is correct. I've seen a lot of late 70's model trucks for sale, with a claim of having Clevelands in the trucks. Lot of confusion with this younger generation, it seems.

Amazing how the day before it goes up for sale, every tired old 352 magically becomes a 390 overnight, and how many 351M boat anchors are "mistaken" by their sellers as a red hot Cleveland, instead of a slug Modified.

Curious how they never notice the difference in performance, like the difference between a Vespa scooter and a Kawaski 900. Guess they just weren't paying attention.

i know it is a cleveland

Post by STOFFER »

I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT I HAVE A CLEVELAND, the motor and trans came out of a TORINO and were re-built at my dads friends machine shop. the engine runs awsome it's just that the C-6 doesn't have overdrive and I prefer a manual transmission. Maybe I should try to find an AOD and install a factory tech shift kit to help strengthen it up for the rare occasion that I do haul anything.

the other option I have been considering is just to throw in a 5.4 4V engine (with the sullivan intake for a carberater) and a 6 speed trans out of a superduty pickup but I dunno maybe just going with a 460 or 351 Windsor and 5 speed would be easier and probably cheaper.

YES I have the 4V heads and I YES am considering a stroker crank and aussie heads. it has an aluminum edelbrock intake, and a holley 700cfm carb. I am looking at going with a comp cams 272 and long tube headers to replace the shorty headers it curently has.

You would be wise to dump the 4V heads, open or closed chamber. The Aussie 2V are the way to go for a street vehicle and most race applications. No porting recommended other than a light blend just under the valve seats. most machine shops will do this reasonablly when they are in for a valve job. Good luck.

flywheel interchange

Post by STOFFER »

will the flywheel and clutch from a 351 Windsor swap onto the 351 Cleveland?? I have a 351 Windsor with a rod knocking so I could pull the transmission and flywheel / clutch from the '66 and throw it behind the cleveland.

I've been looking and I can stroke either engine for about the same money  sorry bout the ranting

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/351C-351 ... dZViewItem

so will the Windsor flywheel work on the cleveland???

All SBF (221/260/289/302/351 both C&W) are externally balanced. All flywheels will interchange & physically bolt on. The only "gotcha" is in late '79 or so, Ford changed the balance factor from 28oz to 50oz.

Another important tidbit, you have to have the harmonic balancer to go with the flywheel - in other words, you can swap early & late flywheels, just be sure to keep an early balancer with the early flywheel & vice-verse. Of course, this may impact your pulley choice, so your parts gathering may not end there... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads ... s/wink.gif

Starter nose cones do vary somewhat - they are all close which is maddening & virtually impossible to tell the difference by just looking (unless they're side by side). When you go get a starter from your local parts house, do it by engine/trans combo (sucking eggs, I know, but...)

truck farmer what year and make did the AOD behind your 351 come from? my dad has an early 90's lincoln towncar in the junk yard that has a 302 with an AOD trans maybe I'll snag that trans and toss it in behind the 351.

OR I guess I can look for a ZF 5 speed truck tranny.

The AOD in my panel is from a 88 Tbird. I was told to get a 88-newer car transmission or one from a truck or van. By 88, Ford had the bugs worked out of them.
